A period of 20 minutes, spread across two halves, saw the California women’s soccer team score twice to take down San Francisco on March 31. Lauren Battung struck in the 32nd minute and Miranda White scored five minutes into the second half.
“We played a nice brand of soccer against San Francisco,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “We were pleased with the goal-scoring opportunities that we created. USF also played well in what was a good and competitive match.”
The Golden Bears are now 2-0 in spring ball. Next on the slate is an April 8 match at San Jose State that will kick off at 8 p.m.
In addition to the well-rounded team attack, the shutout came courtesy a three-pronged defense in goal with all three keepers – Lauren Hein, Emily Kruger and Kathleen Messinger – seeing time between the posts.
Megan Indermill captained an offensive build-up from the back with a penetrating pass that found Emi Lawson’s foot, but her ensuing shot hit the crossbar. Battung collected the rebound and shot on target for the first goal of the game.
The second goal featured another shot and rebound. This time, Mekenna DeBack had the assist when White scored off a follow up of DeBack’s shot.
